Civil War Living History Weekend
“Battle of Forks Road”
Friday, February 20 - Saturday, February 21, 2009
Bring your entire family to the 144th anniversary of Battle of Forks Road. The reenactment will take place on the museum's historic site, the original battlefield of the final fight for Wilmington on February 20, 1865.
This fourth annual event on Friday features school visits with reenactors for 4th and 8th grade classes. Contact the education department to schedule a time slot, 395-5999 ext. 1019, georgia@cameronartmuseum.com. On Saturday enjoy a welcome and commemoration ceremony, a lecture on the history of the Battle of Forks Road by Dr. Chris Fonvielle, Jr., historian, UNCW, encampments, artillery and firearm demonstrations, battle site tours, period fashions, and family activities. Free and open to the public.
The site is where Major General Robert F. Hoke made his last stand against Union soldiers comprised primarily of U.S. Colored Troops. This significant skirmish followed the fall of Fort Fisher, which led to the fall of Wilmington and the final surrender by the Confederate armies.
